At Raleigh’s February 13, 2024, city council meeting, the Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) and the City of Raleigh announced the first set of recommendations developed by the Philadelphia-based Interface Studio as part of the Downtown Raleigh Economic Development Strategy process.
These recommendations, which they call “Ten Big Ideas,” focus on Fayetteville Street and the surrounding central business district. They are:
- Develop a streetscape design for Fayetteville Street that offers variations on a theme.
- Build a strong foundation to ensure downtown is clean, safe and vibrant.
- Develop a family-friendly itinerary and route around Fayetteville Street attractions.
- Market the downtown core as North Carolina’s main street.
- Celebrate Raleigh’s Black business district.
- Add more housing on and around Fayetteville Street.
- Use public space to support neighborhood livability.
- Reposition City Plaza as downtown’s front porch.
- Grow Raleigh’s arts and entertainment district.
- Create a bold connection south of downtown (to Dix Park).
This is the first part of the plan. More will be announced this summer. You can find more information on the DRA website as well as a link for you to provide feedback.
Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) serves as the administrator of the Downtown Raleigh Municipal Services District (MSD), which is a defined special assessment district in which property owners contribute toward enhanced services.
