On March 19, 2024, the mayor and city council passed a resolution of intent to consider an ordinance amending the city’s charter to change the length of the terms of office of the mayor and council members to four-year staggered terms, to change the election method to a nonpartisan primary and election, and to set a public hearing on the proposed charter amendments.

The public hearing will take place on April 2, 2024 at 7pm to discuss changing to four-year staggered terms with a primary.

The results of a third-party survey organized by the city indicated that 50 percent of Raleigh residents polled did not support or were not supportive at all of moving to four-year terms.
