On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the Raleigh City Council agreed that they plan to approve the first increase in taxi fares in 17 years, and the change would become effective May 1, 2024. The City of Raleigh Police made the request; they are responsible for regulating taxis, including taxi fares.

The $1.95 base taxi fare will increase to $3.00. It is in line with taxi prices in Charlotte, NC, and the rate is competitive with similar transportation services such as Uber.

The council also approved other taxi operation increases, including a cleanup charge of $75 for customers whose behavior may require cleanup, such as vomiting.  Previously, riders were not charged any fee.  Similar transportation companies charge $150.

A taxi driver explained to council that operating costs (for car maintenance, including tire prices and oil changes) are now approximately five times higher than they were 17 years ago.
