The newly-elected members of the Raleigh City council held their first council meeting on December 3, 2024. It was also the last council meeting of the year.
In November, Janet Cowell was elected to replace Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin. Mitchell Silver beat Mary Black in the election as council member for District A. The remaining council members all kept their seats: Stormie D. Forte, Jonathan Lambert-Melton, Megan Patton (District B), Corey Branch (District C), Jane Harrison (District D), and Christina Jones (District E). NOTE: Stormie D. Forte and Jonathan Lambert-Melton are “at large” council members which means they represent all districts.
At the meeting, Stormie D. Forte was named “Mayor Pro-tem.” “Pro tem” is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase pro tempore, which means “temporary.” The mayor pro tem serves temporarily in place of the mayor when the mayor is absent.
At the meeting, the council approved more than $11M in additional funds for new City Hall building project to add an extra floor as well as to fund public art, approved a work plan for the Community Engagement Board, approved park updates and historic landmark designations, and approved multiple rezoning requests as well as a property annexation.
The council also accepted federal grants of $20,336,500 for the Southern and Western Bus Rapid Transit Corridors Project Development.
The council renamed the Crabtree Creek West Greenway suspension bridge as the “Todd B. Delk Memorial Bridge.” More information about Mr. Delk is in his obituary.
The next Raleigh city council meeting will be January 7. The agenda will include Proposed Revisions to the Noise and Nightlife Permit Ordinances. The council will hold a retreat on January 24 and 25.
